Life Education programme in Weeks 9 & 10

Remember Harold?  The Life Education truck is back at Avalon for the next two weeks.
Room 2 will learn how unique and special we are, how to be comfortable with our identity and how to build up our self esteem.  We will learn how the body system works and how to look after our bodies.
This is the logo for the Life Education programme in 2015.  We are looking forward to learning more about what Moving Up, Moving On means.

Week 9 in Room 2

Ashlyn and Te-Amorangi hosted the school assembly this week.  They were well prepared and represented Room 2 with pride.  Well done girls.

Busy, busy, busy using the laptops to complete math activities in Room 2.

Reading is an important part of learning so we make the most of silent reading time.

Learning from Victoria University experts about computers and how they work was fun.  We even had the chance to send electrical currents through fruit such as a banana, kiwifruit and an orange.  That was weird listening to the high pitch tone when we connected up the fruit.

Hockey Skills Week 8

Room 2 lining up for hockey skills with an expert from Wellington Hockey.

Tluang managed to get past Kristan who was defending him.

Hold the hockey stick firmly with two hands.  Good body 'haka' position Rm 2.

Waiting for the next instruction.  Hit the ball using the flat part of the hockey stick.

Keep your eyes on the ball and bend your knees.

Hockey skills is fun!

Room 2 Takes The Plunge

This is Week 6 and we started off with swimming lessons at Stokes Valley Pool.

We were split up into 4 groups dependent on our swimming abilities; Sharks, Killer Whales, Dolphins and Aqua-ducks.

The swimming instructors were awesome, showing us how to streamline our bodies and how to blow bubbles under the water.

We used flutter boards to help us balance and keep afloat when we practised kicking in the water.  We held on to the board with both hands by extending our arms out in front of us.

We swam up and down the lanes to practise kicking, breathing and stroke skills.  It was fun but tiring.

We floated on our backs and used the flutter boards to keep us afloat.  It was hard to stay in a straight line but we managed to follow the instructions.

Room 2 Classroom Meeting

Do you know what a bristlebot is?

Room 2 are learning cool activities to develop our knowledge of Information Technlogy.

A team from Victoria University are visiting Avalon for the next few weeks to teach us about computer programming using Scratch and other awesome topics called Robot Hands, Unplugged, Android Phones, RiverWatch and Space.

We were surprised to find out that all you need is the head of a toothbrush, a small battery, a motor, a pipe cleaner and blue tack to make a bristlebot that really moved around!  The activity kept the class focused and motivated to learn more.  Our bots raced along the lino floor and kept us amused and engaged for ages.

Community Art opportunity

We love creating art at Avalon so we had the opportunity to make our own flags to be displayed at the new community facility at Taita which is opening up very soon.

Experts from the Dowse Art Gallery came to Avalon with coloured cloths, black paint and brushes.  The hall was used as our art studio and 2 classes at a time had the chance to design and paint our original art pieces.

It was so cool to paint on the floor alongside our friends.  There was plenty of great ideas and everyone's flag will fly proudly at the new facility.

Term 3 Events - Basketball Skills with the Tall Blacks

We are learning to improve our basketball skills in Term 3 with  support from the Tall Blacks.  Thank you to  George and Brendan who are teaching us drills, skills, fun games and the rules of basketball.  Room 2 really enjoy participating and making the most of this fantastic opportunity.

Dribbling the ball was tricky unless you bounced it hard and try to keep the ball below waist level.

Passing and catching the ball are key skills to practise if you want to be in the Tall Blacks team.

The weather tried to disrupt our sessions but we were determined to keep going.

Room 2 future Tall Blacks in the making!!!

Cricket Skills with Taita Cricket Club players

Today, Room 2 were first up to have cricket skills with members of the Taita Cricket Club.  Not even the light rain could stop us from getting outside to be actively involved in yet another  opportunity offered at Avalon.
Bowling skills were taught through a number of fun games such as snowball tag, golden child and no man's land.
Aiming high and never giving up was shown on the astro turf at the cricket skills session today.
Great job Room 2!

AVALON stands for...

Room 2 now have a better understanding of what the key areas in the AVALON acrostic mean after a number of discussions and brainstorming sessions.
Each statement in blue was broken down to what it means for us in Room 2 as learners (in yellow.)  We were then able to co-construct our classroom rules agreement (OCRs).  Fantastic job Room 2.

Active learning in Room 2

This is evidence of 2 week's worth of learning in Room 2.  Our writing is on the wall about who we are.

Inquiry about Leadership is displayed with our prior knowledge and our wonderings.

Learning about how recount texts are put together and the purpose for them is modelled for us to refer to.

Active reflection bubbles remind us that we have to think about what we are thinking about.

Great job Room 2.

Week 1 in Room 2

This is week 1 in Room 2. Pens in our hands, heads down and getting on with the learning.  A full class with all students keen and eager to learn.
